A while ago Buick was saying that they want to become something a bit more than just re-branding Chevrolet cars. Well, it seems that they are on the right track, especially after they released the 2016 Buick Avista Concept at the Detroit Auto Show.
The car is based on GM’s Alpha platform, being one of the first Buick cars in the recent years to be rear wheel drive. Also, the car is quite large when compared with their current models and despite the fact it is a sports car, it also offers the luxury features of any other Buick.
2016 Buick Avista Concept Release date
So far we don’t know for sure if Buick will actually decide to build the car on a larger scale but we have to say that the model showcased in Detroit was pretty convincing. The car is also expected to make a return in Chicago next month where Buick will likely give us more details about it.
We do hope that they will put it into production but unfortunately we don’t know when or how for now. We do know that the car will be less powerful than the ATS-V but this doesn’t really mean that it will be less expensive.
Price for 2016 Buick Avista
In fact, we expect the two cars to share a similar price point with the only major difference being the tuning of the suspension system and the features offered inside the cabin.
Due to this, the 2016 Buick Avista Concept could cost as much as $65,000 when it will be released which is quite a bit more than some people expected it to cost.
Interior of Buick Avista
Inside the cabin, the concept features a very futuristic interior and we are almost certain that this will not go into production. The instrument cluster is made out of three individual screens and the car features only four seats.
On top of that, Buick worked quite a bit in order to make the passengers feel like they’re on a beach so the car’s seats and door covers have been 3D printed in order to emulate the feel of the beach-sand.
Buick Avista Exterior
The exterior is a bit more impressive and we have to say that it has the potential to go into production without having to change too many things about it.
The front end, while featuring all the usual Buick design cues such as the big gaping grille and the slim LED headlights which do make us think about the new Insignia, is quite aggressive and manages to combine all those design notes in something really good looking.
Also, the car has a very long wheelbase for its size with very short overhangs, so it looks ready to go. The rear is short and the hood is long for a classic GT-inspired look.
Engine of Buick Avista Concept
Engine wise, the 2016 Buick Avista Concept is using GM’s brand new 3 liter twin-turbocharged V6 which has been actually designed by Cadillac. This will offer 400 horsepower and little less than 400 lb-ft of torque which is slightly lower than the ATS-V.
However, this is because the Avista is meant to be a long-distance luxury cruiser while the ATS-V is more of a sports sedan. The car has this engine mated to an 8 speed automatic which drives the rear wheels only via a limited slip differential.
If it will actually go into production, we are almost certain that the Avista will also receive a couple more engines to go with the great design. A newly developed hybrid using a 2 liter turbocharged inline 4 petrol engine as the base as well as a larger twin-turbocharged V8 could be offered in the future, making the Buick brand once again one of the top premium car brands in the World.
