A model has been spied testing not too long ago and the SUV is actually based on a shorter platform of the Phantom II car. The test-mule had a body based on the Phantom but it was shorter and higher off the ground.

Rolls Royce even said that this mule is testing a new suspension and drivetrain system that will provide the magic carpet ride of the Phantom, all without losing the performance of going off the road.

The release date is likely going to be at the end of 2016 while the production model will be released a bit later.

The price is unknown at this point but considering it will be based on the Phantom rather than the Ghost, the 2017 Rolls-Royce SUV could cost in excess of $350,000, thus making it the most expensive production SUV in the World.

Engine of Rolls-Royce SUV 2017

Engine wise, the Cullinan will likely use the same powertrain as the one found in the Phantom which is not the most powerful by any means but it does provide the most amount of balance and smoothness.

The 6.75 liter naturally aspirated V12 is capable in the Phantom of 454 horsepower and 531 lb-ft of torque which Rolls Royce calls adequate.

The car should also feature limited slip and lockable differentials as well as an air suspension system which will provide the required ride.

Rolls-Royce SUV Exterior

The exterior of the upcoming Rolls SUV is unfortunately unknown at this point and there are not many rumors about it either.

However, Rolls Royce said in a press release that the test mule spied earlier this year gives us an indication of the dimensions of the car and that’s about it.

This means it will be around 20 inches shorter than the Phantom but it will still be bigger than most other SUVs out there.

On top of that, the air suspension system seems to be adjustable so the car will likely be able to change its ground clearance according to the road surface it is driving on.

The front end will get the same grille as all the other cars from their roster and a similar headlights design to that of the Phantom but the back of the Cullinan is likely going to be all new.

Interior of Rolls-Royce 2017

Inside the cabin, the 2017 Rolls-Royce SUV will only feature the best materials available on the market.
